These are the plants that will dominate your feed in 2020
They are green, photogenic and social media stars.
Green plants have always been a source of inspiration and recreation, but at least as often have been associated with older ladies and those with special interests.
In the last couple of years, however, the interest in plants - in the same way as the interest in flowers - has spread via Instagram to the younger generation, who in turn have done something about the way we relate to the green houseplants.
Milk & Honning has spoken to a bunch of experts about which plants will dominate your Insta feed in 2020.
Back to nature
- We will see a lot more plants from our own climate in the future, says Anne Mina Lillelien in Mina Milanda to Melk & Honey.
She highlights ferns and the Terrarium, which is planted in glass - and has its own ecosystem. Preferably creatively decorated with other natural elements, such as shells and stones. Moses varieties, also in glass, are another trend she believes in for 2020.
- Everything that provides moisture and a lively, independent expression. That explains the trend that we want a piece of nature in.
- Why do you think we are so concerned with green plants?
- Because it is so existential for us humans. We depend on nature, also on an aesthetic level. It makes us thrive, breathe and live. They simply increase our quality of life.
Lillelien believes that the plant trend will increase our knowledge of surrounding ourselves with living materials, and that it will turn into a lifestyle - so that we get even closer to nature.
Tropical trends
John Andrè Hanøy, the man behind the niche store Luck Oslo in Grünerløkka, believes that green plants give us the grounding we need, and allow us to bring nature into our home.
He predicts that 2020 will be the year in which we will continue to see a lot of tropical green plants, but that there will also be more colors on the leaves.
- This year we will see a lot of variegated plants such as calathea, maranta, syngonium, hoya and philodendron.
Hanøy also highlights begonias, which come in all varieties and colours. The trend with succulents and cacti continues. We will still see a lot of the trending plants monstera and strelitzia nicolai, he believes.
- Plants that we have not seen in Europe before will also appear.
He believes that plants and plant care are no longer the preserve of older ladies.
- What is particularly nice is that there are now many men who buy and collect plants. It wasn't like that before.
Trade plants as art
The high demand for plants and flowers has meant that more and more people dare to bet on niche concepts, such as plant shops that are not part of a chain.
The girls behind Oslo's new plant shop have done exactly that. Botany focuses on the everyday luxury that plants and flowers provide.
- We think the trend with plants is twofold. Needs and decoration. It is in our nature to want to surround ourselves with plants as they produce oxygen, says managing director, Hedda Braathen.
The plants they predict will be most trendy in 2020 are large tropical plants as well as hanging plants.
- Strelitzia has long been a favourite, and is still loved by many. Areca and Veitchia palms underline the tropical trend that will also characterize the interior design in 2020, Braathen asserts.
She goes on to say that the great focus on green plants in recent years has made us more aware of what gives us peace and joy.
- Most of us have experienced sitting in a trendy environment with plants. Then the subconscious comes into play, and the brain tells us that "we like this" and want more.
Braathen says that the way we buy plants has changed after the green shift came. Now we look at our plant purchases in a completely different way.
- We see that people buy plants more as art. They want large plants that give a wow effect, and often plan the entire room around a statement plant. "Bigger is better"
